Vietnam is a country with abundant natural resources and diverse cultures, attracting countless travelers and adventurers every year. As someone who loves hunting, I have always wanted to go to Vietnam to experience the wildlife and natural scenery there. So, my two friends Barry Adolph and Steven Byron and I decided to go hunting at Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve in central Vietnam in March 2023. It is a forest area isolated from human activities, surrounded by a series of mountains, and has rich biodiversity. As we planned to hunt at night, night vision binoculars were essential equipment. Before we went hunting in Vietnam, we first needed to understand where we were going: Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve. This is a natural reserve located on the Kon Tum plateau in central Vietnam, with an area of about 50 square kilometers and an altitude between 1500 meters and 2600 meters. It has rich biodiversity and is the habitat of many endangered species.
The name of Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve comes from the mountain range where it is located: Ngoc Linh Mountains. This is a mountain peak with a height of 2598 meters, known as the “roof of southern Vietnam.” The Ngoc Linh Mountains are part of the Annamite Range, which is the natural boundary between Vietnam and Laos. The climate here is changeable and has tropical, subtropical, and temperate characteristics.
Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve has unique vegetation types, including evergreen broad-leaved forests, coniferous forests, bamboo forests, and shrubs. There are 385 plant species here, including 16 globally endangered species, such as Vietnamese ginseng (Panax vietnamensis).
Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve is also the home of many wild animals, with 51 mammal species, 171 bird species, 15 reptile species, and 25 amphibian species. There are some animals that are only distributed here or rarely seen, such as the Truong Son muntjac (Muntiacus truongsonensis), Ngoc Linh laughingthrush (Garrulax ngoclinhensis), and Lumarius tree frog (Gracixalus lumarius).
Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve is a very suitable place for hunting because it has rich wildlife resources and human activities are minimal, which will not disturb the lives of animals. We hope to see some rare or precious animals here, or at least experience the charm of the Vietnam forest.

Before going hunting in Vietnam, we need to prepare some necessary equipment, and the most important of them is the night vision binoculars. As we plan to hunt at night, many wild animals will come out and move around, and human eyes cannot see clearly in the dark. The hunting process was not smooth sailing; we encountered some challenges and difficulties. For example, due to the high altitude, low temperature, and thin air, we needed to adapt to the climate and environment. Also, due to the dense forest and complex terrain, we needed to walk carefully to avoid getting lost or injured. Moreover, since the animals here are very alert and agile, we needed to be patient, wait for the right time and angle to shoot.
In addition to hunting, we also visited some interesting attractions near Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve in Vietnam and tasted some delicious food. Here are some of our recommendations:
Mountain top temple: This is a Buddhist temple located on the top of Ngoc Linh Mountain, built-in 1976, and is the center of local faith. The temple’s architectural style is simple and elegant, harmoniously blending with the surrounding natural environment. From the temple, you can overlook the magnificent scenery of the entire reserve and feel a sense of peace and tranquility.
Coffee garden: Vietnam is one of the world’s largest coffee-producing countries, and there are many coffee gardens near Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve that grow varieties such as Arabica and Robusta. We visited one of the coffee gardens, learned about the planting, harvesting, and processing of coffee, and tasted freshly roasted coffee with a strong aroma and mellow taste.
Mi Quang: This is one of the most famous foods in Vietnam, made from rice noodles and usually served with meat soup, cilantro, bean sprouts, and other condiments. We ate a bowl of Mi Quang at a small stall, which felt very refreshing and nourishing and was especially suitable for eating in high-altitude areas.
Spring rolls: This is another classic food in Vietnam, wrapped with various fillings such as shrimp, pork, and vegetables with rice paper, then fried or eaten raw. We tried two types of spring rolls, one fried with crispy skin and tender filling, and the other eaten raw with a refreshing taste, paired with peanut sauce or fish sauce, which was very delicious.
