Zona Julius, Matthew Larkin and I are good friends from college. We studied computer science together at a university in the United States, and participated in many interesting projects and activities. We have a deep friendship, and often discuss topics such as study, life, and future. After graduation, we went on different paths. Zona Julius went to the UK, Matthew Larkin went to Australia, and I returned to China. Due to the busy work and life, we rarely had the opportunity to contact, let alone meet.

Last month, I suddenly received a phone call from Zona Julius. He said that he and Matthew Larkin wanted to come to China to see me, and experience the Chinese hunting culture by the way. He said they saw an introduction about Zhonghua Mountain Forest Park on the Internet, and thought it was an ideal hunting place. He asked me if I was interested in going with them, and I gladly agreed. We soon agreed on the time and place, prepared the necessary equipment and documents, and embarked on the hunting trip.

Zhonghua Mountain Forest Park is located in the southwest of Guangshui City, Hubei Province. It is a national forest park that integrates natural scenery, ecological tourism, hunting sports, and science education. The park covers an area of 12,000 acres, with a forest coverage rate of 95%, and has more than 200 rare plants and more than 100 wild animals. There are ten scenic spots in the park, such as Tianchi, Baiyun Gorge, Shizi Rock, etc., each with its own characteristics, making people linger.

The three of us took planes from different countries to Wuhan, and then took a high-speed train to Guangshui City. In Guangshui City, we booked an off-road vehicle and drove along the mountain road to Zhonghua Mountain Forest Park. Along the way, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery outside the window and felt the great rivers and mountains of China. We also chatted with each other, sharing our work and life experiences, and recalling the fun stories and experiences from college. We felt like we were back in the past, without any barriers or strangeness.

When we arrived at the park, we first went to the hunting service center and completed the relevant procedures and insurance. We chose the night hunting project because we wanted to experience the thrill and fun of hunting wild animals in the dark. We also rented professional night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars so that we could better observe and shoot targets at night. The staff at the service center assigned us a hunting area and told us precautions and safety rules. They also provided us with a walkie-talkie so that we could contact them in case of emergency.

We took our equipment and drove to our hunting area. We stopped at a flat place and prepared to start our hunting trip.

A night vision hunting rifle is a firearm that uses night vision technology to aim and shoot targets in the dark. The principle of a night vision hunting rifle is to amplify the weak ambient light or infrared light, and then present a clear image through a small display screen or eyepiece lens, allowing hunters to see the position and outline of the target. We continued to look for other targets and soon found a group of pheasants foraging. We each selected the chicken we wanted to shoot and fired at the same time, killing them all. We joyfully picked up their bodies and imagined what they would look like as delicious dishes. We then moved deeper into the forest, hoping to encounter bigger and stronger animals. We soon found a majestic deer that looked especially mighty in the moonlight. We carefully approached it, aimed at its heart with a night vision hunting rifle, and prepared to kill it with one shot. Just as we were about to pull the trigger, we suddenly heard a low roar from behind us. We were startled and turned around quickly, only to find a ferocious wolf rushing at us with its sharp teeth and claws. We had no time to think, we could only instinctively shoot at it. Luckily, our reaction was fast and our shooting was accurate, and we successfully repelled the wolf. We breathed a sigh of relief and thanked the night vision hunting rifle for saving our lives. We decided not to take any more risks, end the hunt, and return to the vehicle. We counted our harvest and found that we had killed a rabbit, five pheasants, a duck, and a wolf. We found many amazing and delightful things after using infrared binoculars. For example, we saw a panda sleeping in the dark, which still looked very cute; we saw a group of fireflies mating in the night sky, flashing beautiful lights; we saw an owl hunting in the air, showing amazing speed and agility. These are scenes that we cannot see or are hard to see with naked eyes or ordinary binoculars, which opened our eyes and increased our knowledge. Of course, we also encountered some problems when using infrared binoculars. For example, sometimes due to low battery power or low temperature, the infrared light source or sensor failed, affecting the observation effect. To solve this problem, we timely replaced the battery or heated up the device to restore normal function. In addition, sometimes due to the target animal being too sensitive or alert, once they detected our infrared light source, they would immediately run away or attack us. To avoid this problem, we tried to reduce the brightness and angle of the infrared light source, keep a certain distance and concealment, and respect the animal’s habits.

Guangshui City is a county-level city with a long history in Hubei Province, located at the confluence of the Han River and the Sha River. It is one of the birthplaces of the Han River culture. Guangshui City not only has rich cultural heritage, but also has unique food flavors. There are many characteristic foods in Guangshui City, among which the most famous are the following:

Guai Zi Fan: Guai Zi Fan is a kind of rice dumpling made of glutinous rice and various fillings. It is shaped like a cane, hence the name Guai Zi Fan. The fillings of Guai Zi Fan include meat, beans, vegetables, etc., and the taste is salty or sweet. Guai Zi Fan is a traditional festival food in Guangshui City, especially during the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. People will give each other Guai Zi Fan to express their blessings and reunion.

Mei Qian Zhang: Mei Qian Zhang is a kind of soy product made by fermenting tofu skin. It has a golden color, soft texture, and delicious taste. Mei Qian Zhang can be cold mixed, fried, stewed, boiled, etc. It is a common dish on the daily table of Guangshui people.

Hua Rou: Hua Rou is a kind of meat slice made by cutting pork or beef into thin slices, mixing them with starch, salt, eggs and other seasonings, and then boiling them in boiling water. Hua Rou is characterized by tender, non-greasy, and easy to digest meat slices. It can be eaten with various sauces or dips, or paired with other dishes.

We drove to a characteristic restaurant in Guangshui City after finishing hunting, ready to taste the local food. We ordered Guai Zi Fan, Mei Qian Zhang, Hua Rou and other dishes, as well as some other snacks and soups. We ate and chatted, feeling the local customs and delicious food of Guangshui City. We praised the food of Guangshui City, feeling that every dish had its own characteristics and flavors. Our favorite was Guai Zi Fan, because it not only had a sticky and fragrant taste, but also implied auspiciousness. We toasted each other with Guai Zi Fan, wishing each other happiness and health. We also recalled the various foods we had eaten together in college, such as pizza, burgers, sushi, etc., sighing that time passed so fast, and grateful that friendship remained unchanged. We ate very happily and satisfactorily. We felt that this meal was the perfect end to our hunting trip.

Our hunting trip ended like this. We returned to our respective countries with full harvest and insights. We felt that this trip was a rare experience that made us rediscover the passion and joy of college days. We used night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars to experience a new way of hunting, feeling a different kind of excitement and fun. We appreciated beautiful natural paintings and observed some rare animals and plants in Zhonghua Mountain Forest Park. We tasted authentic food and recalled some unforgettable stories and experiences in the restaurant of Guangshui City. We felt that this trip not only enriched our knowledge and vision, but also deepened our friendship and emotion. We were very grateful to each other for the opportunity and memory that this trip brought us. We looked forward to meeting again in the future, continuing to explore more places and enjoy more fun.
