I and Benson Walker, Albert Dulles are college classmates, we are all people who love nature and adventure. After graduation, we went our separate ways, and rarely had the opportunity to meet again. Last month, we finally had a rare opportunity to get together, we decided to go to China’s Hunan Xiangtan Jinsha Mountain Forest Park hunting, experience a different culture and exciting night hunting.

Jinsha Mountain Forest Park is a scenic, ecologically diverse national forest park, it is located in the southeast of Xiangtan city, about 20 kilometers from the city center. Here there are rich animal and plant resources, has a long history and culture, has a variety of natural and cultural landscapes. We are full of curiosity and expectation for here.

In order to hunt, we prepared some necessary equipment, the most important of which are night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars. These two binoculars can let us see clearly the position and movement of animals in the dark, thereby improving our hunting efficiency and safety. We hope to capture some precious and delicious wild animals.

In addition to hunting, we also want to taste the Hunan cuisine. Hunan cuisine is one of the eight major cuisines in China, famous for its spicy flavor. We are all spicy food lovers, so we are very interested in Hunan cuisine. We heard that there are many characteristic snacks and staple foods here, such as rice noodles, spicy chicken bundles, crispy peppers, lanterns called, chopped pepper fish head and so on. We want to taste all these delicious dishes, feel the charm of Hunan flavor.

This is the cause and purpose of our Hunan trip, next, I will describe in detail our process and experience of hunting and tasting Hunan cuisine in Jinsha Mountain Forest Park, take you to feel this unforgettable trip.

Here, we felt the charm of nature and the cultural heritage.

Jinxia Mountain is the main peak of the park, with an altitude of about 800 meters, steep terrain, and a flat top. The mountain has a dense forest, with a variety of rare wild animals and plants, such as Jinxia Mountain macaques, Jinxia Mountain sparrows, Jinxia Mountain azaleas, Jinxia Mountain orchids, etc. The mountain also has many peculiar rocks and caves, such as Jinlong Cave, Bailong Cave, Shimen Cave, etc. We climbed to the top of Jinxia Mountain, enjoyed the spectacular sunrise and sunset, felt the changes of clouds and mist, and heard the harmony of birds and insects.

Longxing Temple is one of the most famous cultural attractions in the park. It is a Buddhist temple with a long history, built in the Tang Dynasty. The temple covers an area of about 10 acres, divided into three courtyards, with a simple and elegant architectural style. The temple has many precious Buddha statues and murals, such as the Thousand-Hand Guanyin statue, the Eighteen Arhats statue, the Five Hundred Arhats statue, etc. The temple also has some legendary stories, such as the origin of the name of Longxing Temple, the miracle of Longxing Temple fire, etc. We visited Longxing Temple, felt the profoundness of Buddhist culture, and experienced the peaceful atmosphere.

Xiangdong Canal is one of the most distinctive water conservancy projects in the park. It is an artificial canal that is 30 kilometers long. It was built in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty to solve the water shortage and irrigation problems in Xiangtan area. It draws water from Jinxia Mountain and passes through many villages and fields along the way, eventually flowing into Xiangjiang River. It not only brings water and irrigation to the local people, but also brings traffic and trade. It is known as “the first canal in Xiangtan”. We walked along Xiangdong Canal, admired the scenery and customs along the coast, and felt the historical value and practical significance of Xiangdong Canal.

Yan Jing is one of the most charming natural attractions in the park. It is a deep natural well that is bottomless. It is located at the southern foot of Jinxia Mountain, surrounded by green bamboo forests. It is named because the well water is clear and can be used to grind ink. It is considered to be “the first inkstone in the world” and a must-visit place for literati and ink lovers. It also has some mysterious legends, such as the magical effects of Yan Jing water, the secret passage at the bottom of Yan Jing, etc. We tasted Yan Jing water, felt its coolness and sweetness, and experienced its cultural atmosphere.

Iron Ox Playing Sand is one of the most interesting entertainment projects in the park. It is a game that uses iron oxen and sand. Iron oxen are toys made of iron in the shape of oxen. They can move freely on sandy ground. Sand is made from golden fine sand produced by Jinxia Mountain. It can be used to pile up various shapes. The rules of the game are to use iron oxen to push sand and pile sand into designated patterns. The fun of the game is to observe the interaction between iron oxen and sand, enjoy the process of creation and competition. We played Iron Ox Playing Sand, felt childishness and challenge, experienced fun and achievement.

These are the main attractions we visited in the Jinxia Mountain Forest Park, of course, there are many other attractions waiting for us to discover and explore. Here, we not only appreciated the beauty and diversity of nature, but also learned about the history and culture of humanity. Here, we not only relaxed our body and mind and emotions, but also increased our knowledge and insight. Here, we not only gained happiness and memories, but also cultivated friendship and affection.

In addition to visiting the various attractions of the Jinxia Mountain Forest Park, we also had an exciting night hunting. We used night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars to observe and hunt at night, capturing some precious and delicious wild animals.

Night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars are two types of binoculars that can see objects clearly in the dark. They use either a low-light amplifier or a thermal imager, an infrared sensor or a laser illuminator to convert invisible light or heat radiation into visible images. They allow us to see the outline and details, temperature and movement of animals at night, so that we can judge the type and location, state and behavior of animals. We used a high-performance night vision binoculars and an advanced infrared binocular, which have the following characteristics:

Magnification: moderate
Field of view angle: wide
Effective viewing distance: far
Weight: light Battery life: long

We set off at dusk, along the path of the Jinxia Mountain Forest Park into the forest. We first used night vision binoculars to search for targets, then used infrared binoculars to confirm targets. We found some interesting and tasty animals, such as wild boars, pheasants, rabbits, ducks, etc. We chose the appropriate time and location according to the habits and characteristics of animals, used the appropriate weapons and ammunition, and performed accurate and safe shooting. We successfully captured some animals, such as two wild boars, three pheasants, four rabbits, five ducks, etc. We brought these animals back to our place and prepared a feast of game.

This night hunting allowed us to experience a different adventure and challenge than during the day. We used night vision binoculars and infrared binoculars, two magical devices that allowed us to see more clearly in the dark and shoot more accurately. We felt the mystery and beauty of the night forest, as well as the thrill and achievement of hunting. This night hunting brought us closer to nature, as well as closer to each other.

After enjoying the natural scenery of the Jinxia Mountain Forest Park and the excitement of night hunting, we also tasted the food of Hunan. Hunan cuisine is one of the eight major cuisines in China, famous for its spiciness. We are all spicy food lovers, so we are very interested in Hunan cuisine. We heard that there are many characteristic snacks and staple foods here, such as rice noodles, spicy chicken skewers, crispy peppers, lamp roast, and chopped pepper fish head. We wanted to taste all these delicious dishes and feel the charm of Hunan flavor.

Rice noodles are a traditional staple food in Hunan, which are made from rice ground into flour and then made into thin noodles. They can be cooked with different soup bases and ingredients, such as sour and spicy soup, beef soup, fish soup, etc. They have a soft and smooth texture, and a rich and fragrant soup. We had a bowl of sour and spicy beef rice noodles at an old-fashioned rice noodle shop, and felt the delicacy of the rice noodles and the sourness and spiciness of the soup.

Spicy chicken skewers are a characteristic snack in Hunan, which are made from chicken cut into small pieces, then mixed with chili, pepper, ginger, garlic and other spices, then skewered with bamboo sticks and roasted on charcoal fire. They have a crispy skin, tender meat, and spicy and delicious flavor. We bought a few skewers of spicy chicken skewers at a roadside stall, and felt the aroma of the chicken and the stimulation of the chili.

Crispy peppers are a characteristic vegetable in Hunan, which are made from a kind of green pepper called crispy pepper cut into small segments, then fried in oil until golden and crisp. They have an attractive appearance, a crisp texture, a mild spiciness and a clear fragrance. We ordered a plate of crispy peppers at a farmhouse restaurant, and felt the sweetness of the green pepper and the aroma of frying.

Lamp roast is a characteristic barbecue in Hunan, which is made from lamb or beef cut into small pieces, then skewered with bamboo sticks and heated under a light bulb. They have a tender texture, an enticing color, and a slight sweetness. We ate a few skewers of lamp roast at a night market stall, and felt the freshness of the meat and the warmth of the light bulb.

Chopped pepper fish head is a famous dish in Hunan, which is made from the head of a large freshwater fish scaled and gutted then washed and cut open, then mixed with chopped red chili, ginger, garlic and other seasonings, placed on a large plate and steamed until cooked. It has a bright color, a strong flavor, and soft fish meat. We tasted a portion of chopped pepper fish head at an authentic Hunan restaurant, and felt the deliciousness of the fish head and the spiciness of the chopped pepper.

These are the Hunan foods we tasted, of course, there are many other foods waiting for us to discover and taste. Here, we not only satisfied our taste buds and appetite, but also broadened our horizons and knowledge. Here, we not only enjoyed the flavor and characteristics of Hunan cuisine, but also experienced the enthusiasm and generosity of Hunan people. Here, we not only shared food and joy, but also enhanced friendship and affection.

This is the whole process of our Hunan trip. We spent an unforgettable time in Jinxia Mountain Forest Park and Xiangtan City. We appreciated the beauty and diversity of nature as well as learned about the history and culture of humanity. We experienced the excitement and challenge of night hunting as well as tasted the flavor and characteristics of Hunan cuisine. We gained happiness and memories as well as cultivated friendship and affection.

We are very grateful for Hunan’s hospitality as well as for each other’s companionship and assistance. We hope to have the opportunity to come here again to explore more beauty and wonder. We also hope to have the opportunity to invite you to our hometown to share our stories and experiences. We believe that no matter where we are we are always friends.
