Singapore professor’s hunting trip in Kota Tinggi: history, attractions and food

Kota Tinggi is a historic and scenic town, located about 100 kilometers north of Singapore. It was once the capital of the old Johor Sultanate, and has many historical and cultural attractions. It is also a natural paradise, with spectacular waterfalls, charming fireflies, rich wildlife and delicious local food. We chose Kota Tinggi as our hunting destination, because it not only has a suitable environment and climate for hunting, but also is not too far from Singapore, making it convenient for us to travel back and forth.

Since we planned to hunt at night, we needed to prepare some necessary equipment, the most important of which was night vision binoculars. This device can help us see clearly in the dark, and improve our hunting efficiency and safety. Before we started hunting, we learned a bit about the history of Kota Tinggi, because it is a place with a long history and rich culture. The name of Kota Tinggi comes from its geographical location, it is built on a highland, much higher than the river level. Kota Tinggi was once the capital of the old Johor Sultanate, from 1528 to 1699, it witnessed the rise and fall of the Johor Sultanate.

Kota Tinggi has many historical relics, the most famous of which is the Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Di Julang Mausoleum (Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Di Julang Mausoleum), which is the tomb of the fifth Sultan of the old Johor Sultanate. He was assassinated in 1699, leading to the turmoil and division of the Johor Sultanate. His mausoleum is located in Johor Lama, about 18 kilometers from Kota Tinggi town, and is a respected and protected place.

In addition to the Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Di Julang Mausoleum, Kota Tinggi also has some other historical relics, such as the Makam Bendahara Tun Habib Abdul Majid (Makam Bendahara Tun Habib Abdul Majid) and Makam Tauhid. These are witnesses of the important figures and events of the Johor Sultanate, reflecting the political, social and religious situation of the Johor Sultanate.

We stayed in Kota Tinggi for two days, during which we visited the following places:• Jason Bay (Teluk Mahkota): This is a beautiful beach, located about 30 kilometers northeast of Kota Tinggi town. The beach has fine sand, clear blue water, and picturesque scenery. We enjoyed the sun, sand and waves here, and also played some water activities, such as surfing, kayaking and banana boat.
• Kota Tinggi Firefly Park: This is a firefly conservation area, located about 9 kilometers southwest of Kota Tinggi town. We took a boat ride along the Johor River in the evening, and enjoyed the countless twinkling fireflies, like a starry sky. This is a very romantic and magical experience, which makes us feel the wonder of nature.
• Pelepah Waterfall (Air Terjun Gunung Pelepah): This is a waterfall at the foot of Mount Muntahak, about 16 kilometers from Kota Tinggi town. The waterfall has four layers, each with a deep pool, suitable for swimming and playing with water. We felt cool and comfortable here, and also took many beautiful photos.
• Kota Tinggi Waterfall (Air Terjun Kota Tinggi): This is a bigger and more spectacular waterfall, located about 16 kilometers north of Kota Tinggi town. The waterfall is 34 meters high and 20 meters wide, with a rapid water flow and an amazing momentum. We heard the roar of the waterfall here, felt the splash of water droplets, and also saw the appearance of rainbows.
• Koref Desaru Leisure Farm: This is a leisure farm, located near Desaru Beach. The farm has a variety of animals and plants, as well as some entertainment facilities and activities, such as horse riding, fishing, boating, rock climbing and so on. We experienced some fun of farm life here, and also learned some agricultural knowledge.
• Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm: This is a crocodile farm, located near Sungai Rengit town. The farm has more than 1000 crocodiles, including some rare and old species. We watched the crocodile feeding show here, and also touched a baby crocodile by hand.
By visiting these attractions, we have a more comprehensive understanding of Kota Tinggi’s nature and culture, and also increased our knowledge and insight. We feel the diversity and charm of Kota Tinggi, not only in its history and culture, but also in its scenery and style.

Kota Tinggi also has many delicacies, which allow us to taste its flavor and characteristics in addition to hunting. We tasted the following foods in Kota Tinggi:
• Mee Rebus Mak Long: This is a small shop located on Jalan Kampung Tembioh, specializing in Mee Rebus, a Malay dish of noodles with sweet and spicy sauce. The Mee Rebus noodles are soft and smooth, the sauce is rich and thick, and the ingredients are abundant, such as tofu, eggs, bean sprouts, fried onions and so on. This shop’s Mee Rebus is very popular, and there are many people waiting in line every day.
• Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh: This is an old-fashioned shop located on Jalan Mawai, specializing in Bak Kut Teh, a Chinese dish of meat stewed with herbs. The Bak Kut Teh meat is tender and fresh, not fishy or smelly, the soup is fragrant and sweet, and has a lingering aftertaste. Each pot is full of portions, and also comes with fried dough sticks, tofu skin, choy sum and so on. This shop’s Bak Kut Teh is very famous, and even attracts people from other places to taste it.
• Okid Kopitiam: This is an old-style coffee shop located on Jalan Tambatan, specializing in traditional breakfast. The coffee shop has retro tables and chairs, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. They sell breakfast such as Hainan bread, curry noodles, eggs, coffee and so on. Hainan bread is baked with charcoal fire, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, spread with butter and jam, very delicious.
• Red Diamond Seafood Kota Tinggi: This is a seafood restaurant located in Bandar Tenggara, specializing in fresh and delicious seafood. The restaurant has a variety of seafood to choose from, such as shrimp, crab, fish, shellfish and so on. They cook seafood in different ways, such as steaming, frying, stir-frying, baking and so on. Their signature dishes are black pepper crab, butter shrimp, ginger onion fish and so on.
• Signature Food Garden: This is a Chinese restaurant located on Jalan Berlian Utama, specializing in exquisite and creative Chinese food. The restaurant is decorated simply and stylishly, with a comfortable and elegant atmosphere. They sell Chinese food with a variety of dishes, such as roast meat, dim sum, noodles, soup and so on. Their signature dishes are mango pork ribs king, cheese shrimp balls, golden sand tofu and so on.
By tasting these foods, we have a deeper experience of Kota Tinggi’s taste and characteristics, and also satisfied our taste buds and appetite. We feel the deliciousness and refinement of Kota Tinggi, not only in its nature and history, but also in its food and creativity.

After enjoying Kota Tinggi’s history, attractions and food, we finally started our long-awaited hunting trip. We chose to hunt at night, because this way we can avoid the heat of the day, and also see some nocturnal animals. We prepared some necessary equipment, the most important of which is night vision binoculars.

Night vision binoculars are devices that allow us to see clearly in the dark, they use infrared or amplify weak light to improve visual effects. Hunting is a stimulating and challenging sport, it tests our patience, skills and courage. We eventually harvested a few preys, such as wild boars and deer, as a souvenir of our hunting trip.

The hunting trip in Kota Tinggi was a very memorable and meaningful experience, which let us not only enjoy the fun of hunting, but also appreciate the charm of Kota Tinggi. We have a deeper understanding and experience of Kota Tinggi’s history, attractions, food and nature, and also increased our knowledge and insight.
