Last month, my two friends Ophelia Delia and Colin Bloor and I went hunting in Des Moines, the capital of Iowa in the United States. It was our first time visiting this city, and we were interested in its history, culture, and cuisine. We booked a comfortable hotel online and began our exploration.
Des Moines is a vibrant and charming city with many sights to see and activities to do. We visited the Capitol building to admire its magnificent architecture and exquisite decorations; we went to the Des Moines Art Center to appreciate various styles of art works and exhibitions; we also tasted local cuisine such as fresh bread and salad from Tangerine Cafe, as well as cheese platters with beer from The Cheese Shop.
Our most anticipated experience was night hunting. Due to poor visibility at night, we needed special equipment to help us detect and track animals. In addition to the Capitol Building, Des Moines also has other attractions worth visiting such as Des Moines Art Center1, Pappajohn Sculpture Park, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden4 etc. The Des Moines Art Center is a museum that collects and displays various works of art housed in three different buildings: modernist architecture designed by Eliot Noyes; postmodernist architecture designed by Richard Meier; and sculpture gardens designed by I.M. Pei. The museum houses works from famous artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Mondrian, Dali etc. Pappajohn Sculpture Park is located downtown showcasing about 30 contemporary sculptures created by artists including Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen’s “Three-way Plug”, Jeff Koons’ “Balloon Dog” , Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate” etc.. Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden covers an area of 14 acres (about 5.7 hectares) with a huge dome greenhouse and seven outdoor gardens featuring plants from around the world like cacti orchids bamboo roses etc.
Des Moines not only has rich history and culture but also delicious food options available . We tried various dishes here such as grilled corn , fried pork chops , cheese platters , pizza etc.. Our favorite was Tangerine Cafe which offers fresh breads salads soups desserts along with coffee tea varieties . We enjoyed a relaxed lunch here feeling welcomed by friendly locals .
In Des Moines, we had an unforgettable time but what we were most looking forward to was the experience of night hunting. Our Feelings:
We felt extremely satisfied with what we achieved during this hunt; proud even! Hunting gave us an adrenaline rush while allowing us intimate contact with nature’s wonders.We experienced various emotions throughout such as :
Fun: Hunting brought joy into each moment spent together where communication flowed freely between us. We laughed and joked while working together to achieve our goals.
Challenge: Hunting also presented us with many challenges such as finding targets, controlling hand tremors, judging distances, adjusting angles etc. We learned and improved continuously throughout the hunt.
Surprise: Hunting brought about unexpected surprises like discovering rare animals or witnessing amazing sights. It was a journey of exploration where we adapted to new situations as they arose.
