I am someone who loves outdoor adventures and hunting. I have two like-minded friends, Barlow Lancelot and Monroe Harte, who are also my colleagues. We all work in wildlife conservation and research, often requiring us to observe and photograph in the wilderness.
Last week, we decided to go camping and hunting in Baiyun Mountain, Guangzhou, China, to experience a different natural landscape and cultural atmosphere. We booked our tickets, hotels and rental cars in advance online, and purchased some necessary equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, flashlights, compasses, etc.
The most important piece of equipment was the Wildguarder night vision binoculars, which is a professional night vision binoculars that can see targets clearly in complete darkness, and can also take high-definition photos and videos. After landing at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, we drove to Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area, which is the most famous scenic spot in Guangzhou and a national AAAAA scenic spot. Baiyun Mountain is located in the northern part of Guangzhou, named after the main peak, Moxing Ridge, which is often covered by white clouds. Baiyun Mountain consists of more than 30 peaks, forming a rectangular shape, 9.7 kilometers long from north to south and 4.5 kilometers wide from east to west, with a total area of approximately 28 square kilometers. The main peak, Moxing Ridge, has an elevation of 382 meters, which is the highest point in Guangzhou.
Baiyun Mountain has been known as “the first show of Yangcheng” since ancient times, and is a good place for Guangzhou people to relax and visit. Baiyun Mountain has both ancient and new eight scenic spots, such as “Pu Jian Lian Quan”, “Baiyun Evening View”, and “Jing Tai Monk Returns”. There are multiple sub-scenic areas in the Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area, such as Moxing Ridge, Sculpture Park, Mingzhu Tower, Yunxi Park, Luhu Park, and Yuntai Garden. Each sub-scenic area has its unique style and characteristics. We planned to stay here for two days and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Baiyun Mountain as much as possible.
We first came to the Moxing Ridge sub-scenic area, which is the main peak and core area of Baiyun Mountain, and also the best place for high-altitude viewing. We took a cable car up the mountain and enjoyed the different angles of Baiyun Mountain along the way. We found an observation deck on the top of Moxing Ridge, where we could overlook the beautiful scenery of Guangzhou and both sides of the Pearl River. We also saw a huge stone tablet with the four characters of “the first show of Yangcheng” engraved on it, which was said to be inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong.
Then we went to the Sculpture Park sub-scenic area, which is one of China’s largest modern sculpture art exhibition bases and one of Guangzhou’s patriotic education bases. Here we saw many sculptures with historical significance and artistic value, such as “Hero Flower Blossom”, “Red Mark”, and “Anti-Japanese War Memorial”. We also visited the Sculpture Museum and the Red Culture Museum, learning about Guangzhou’s important position and contribution in Chinese revolutionary history.
Next, we came to the Mingchun Valley sub-scenic area, which is one of the most natural scenic spots in Baiyun Mountain and a good place to enjoy spring flowers. Here we saw various flowers and plants, such as peach blossoms, cherry blossoms, rhododendrons, and crepe myrtles.
We found a suitable camping spot in the Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area, next to a pine forest and a clear stream. We set up the tent, prepared some simple food, and started our hunting trip. Guangzhou is a city with a long history, rich culture, prosperous economy, and open-mindedness. It is the birthplace and representative of Lingnan culture, as well as the birthplace and center of Cantonese cuisine.
We first went to one of Guangzhou’s most famous attractions, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. This is a group of folk buildings from the Qing Dynasty, consisting of Chen’s Ancestral Hall, Chen’s School, and Chen’s Ancestral House. Here, traditional architectural art and folk crafts of Lingnan region are displayed, such as woodcarving, brick carving, stone carving, and gray sculpture. We enjoyed the exquisite architecture and rich collection of Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and also participated in some interesting interactive activities, such as paper cutting and clay sculpture.
Then we went to one of Guangzhou’s most distinctive foods, morning tea. Morning tea is a Guangzhou people’s lifestyle habit and an important part of Cantonese cuisine. Morning tea usually takes place between 9 am and 11 am, mainly consisting of various dim sum and tea. We tasted morning tea in an old-fashioned tea house, with steamed dumplings, chicken feet, rice noodle rolls, siu mai, char siu bao, etc. We also drank some fragrant tea, such as Tie Guan Yin, Pu’er, and Longjing.
Next, we went to one of Guangzhou’s most famous food streets, Beijing Road Pedestrian Street. This is the commercial district in the center of Guangzhou and also the concentration of Guangzhou snacks. We tried various kinds of snacks here, such as double-skinned milk, boat congee, shrimp dumplings, beef tripe soup, etc. We also bought some specialties and souvenirs, such as dried lychees, dried tangerine peel candy, and chicken biscuits.
Finally, we went to one of Guangzhou’s most representative cultural venues, Guangzhou Opera House. This is a modern comprehensive art center designed by the world-famous architect Zaha Hadid. Various high-level performances are often held here, such as operas, dramas, and concerts. We watched a wonderful Cantonese opera performance here, experiencing the charm of Lingnan culture.
This camping and hunting trip to Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou was an unforgettable journey for me and my friends. We not only enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Baiyun Mountain but also experienced the powerful function of Wildguarder night vision binoculars.
